Mr. John Briscoe of the World Bank had prepared a Report titled India™s Water Economy: Bracing for a Turbulent Future in 2005. The report is based on a study conducted by the World Bank on its own. The report in general discusses various aspects of water resources development and management in India.
Most of the issues raised in the report were already addressed in the National Water Policy, 2002.
Keeping in view the challenges emerging from increasing demands on water resources in the country due to population growth, urbanization, industrialisation etc., Government of India initiated a review of the National Water Policy, 2002. The new National Water Policy, 2012 has been adopted by the National Water Resource Council at its meeting held on 28th December, 2012.
During the sixth Meeting of the National Water Resources Council, held on 28.12.2012 at New Delhi to consider the Draft National Water Policy (2012), some State Governments had suggested modifications in certain provisions of the Draft National Water Policy (2012). The suggestions of the State Governments were examined and the National Water Policy (2012) has been adopted by National Water Resources Council as per deliberations.
