SC sends notice to Center and state on non Implementation of Sexual Harassment Act

The Apex Court on Thursday sought response from the Centre and the States on the non- implementation of the law to prevent Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace.

The bench was head by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, M Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud who issued notices to the several states and Union territories and have asked them to file their response.

The PIL was filed by the NGO, Initiatives by Inclusion Foundation (IIF) and its trustees, which alleged that most of the states and Union Territories have failed to implement the law in its true spirit.

The Law passed in 2013, mandates for setting up of Internal Complaints Committee at all workplaces, appointment of district offices, constitution of a Local Complaints Committee and Nodal Officers.

The statute has superseded the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in Vishaka case of 1997 for prevention and redressal of sexual harassment of women at the workplace.

The court scheduled to fix the next hearing of the case within four weeks.
