DR. CP Joshi Releases Fifth Revision of Specification for Road and Bridge Works ; The Document to Provide Best International Practices For Indian Conditions.
Dr.C P Joshi, the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways with additional charge of Ministry of Railways released here last evening the Fifth Revision of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways specification for Road and Bridge Works.
This revision of the specifications is accomplished by Experts of Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and Indian Roads Congress. These Specifications will be used in the development and maintenance of Roads & Bridges all over the Country by the highway agencies of the Central and State Governments and Union Territories. These specifications provide the best international construction practices applicable to Indian conditions, making optimum use of indigenous resources as well as reclaimed materials to economize the cost of construction, without sacrificing the quality of construction.
This latest Revision is published after about 12 years of publishing the 4th Revision. Developments of the past decade are captured in the revised edition of the specifications providing for new developments in the field of construction technology, material technology and advancement in construction machinery besides updation of earlier content/data in the light of revised codes/standard construction practices. Emphasis is also given to safety requirements.
Some of the important additions in this revised edition cover Stone Mastic Asphalt, Micro Surfacing, prefabricated vertical drains, geo-synthetics, geo cells for use in base and sub base in pavement and slope protection, variable message sign boards, cold applied retro reflective paints, solar powered road markers (solar studs), traffic control and safety devices in construction zones, traffic impact attenuators (Crash Cushions), and advanced traffic management system. The new areas covered in bridges include high performance concrete, HDPE sheathing, Pot-PTFE bearings, jack down method of well sinking, dynamic testing of piles and mechanically woven wire crates for gabions, soil nailing etc.
