IGL Suraksha Yojana – Group Accident Insurance Scheme for CNG run public transport vehicles

Union Petroleum Minister and Delhi Chief Minister launch IGL Suraksha Yojana ; Free group accident scheme for about 2.5 lakh CNG Vehicle drivers of public transport starts in Delhi City Gas Network to be expanded 330 cities soon

Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas, and Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi here today launched IGL Suraksha Yojana, a group accident insurance scheme for nearly 2.5 lakh drivers of CNG run public transport vehicles in Delhi . Smt. Panabaaka Lakshmi, Union Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas, Shri Ramakant Goswami, Transport Minister, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, Shri K.K Gupta, Chairman, IGL, Shri Narendra Kumar, Managing Director, IGL, Shri Puneet Goel, Transport Commissioner, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, Shri Rajesh Chaturvedi, Director (Commercial), IGL, officials from Delhi Government, IGL and a large number of drivers of public transport vehicles were also present on the occasion. The function was organised jointly by Transport Department, Govt. of NCT of Delhi and Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) today in Delhi Secretariat.

Delivering his inaugural address, Dr. M. Veerappa Moily said that new schemes like IGL Suraksha Yojana are required to be introduced to benefit the common man. He complimented Delhi government for successful introduction of CNG in the capital which led to the transformation of the city with drastic reduction in pollution levels. He called upon Delhi government to launch a programme to make Delhi accident free and also offered support from Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in this regard. Highlighting the salient features of IGL Suraksha Yojana, Dr. Moily also disclosed that IGL would be paying the premium amounting to nearly Rs 35 lakh for the insurance scheme, which is currently being offered through Oriental Insurance Company.

Dr Moily also announced that the city gas distribution (CGD) network would be soon expanded to 330 cities. At present he said this is available in 45 cities providing CNG to about 16.5 lakh vehicles. IGL, he said, a joint venture of Petroleum Ministry PSUs GAIL, BPCL and Govt of NCT of Delhi has already undertaken a massive expansion programmed in NCT of Delhi as well as NCR to make CNG & PNG available across length and breadth of the cities. There has been a major increase in demand due to all round conversion of vehicles to CNG and increased acceptability of PNG as a domestic fuel. Dr. Moily informed that   290 CNG stations are currently in operation in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. IGL is supplying PNG to nearly 4, 00,000 households in Delhi and NCR towns.  The role of IGL in checking the vehicular pollution in Delhi is well acknowledged both at national as well as international forums. IGL is meeting fuel requirements of over 7 lakh vehicles in all running on CNG in NCR, the Minister added.

In her keynote address, Smt. Sheila Dikshit complimented Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas for steering the IGL Suraksha Yojana and being present in the occasion of launch of the scheme. She called upon the drivers of public transport vehicles to benefit from the schemes offered by the government.

Earlier in her address, Mrs. Panabaaka Lakshmi said that the PSUs under the ambit of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have been trendsetters in the field of CSR, which is in consonance with the vision of the government. While complimenting IGL for launching the scheme, she also thanked Delhi government for making land available to IGL for setting up CNG stations.

Mr Ramakant Goswami in his address thanked Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and IGL for launching this unique initiative on behalf of transport fraternity.

In his welcome address, Mr. K.K. Gupta, Chairman, welcomed the guests and highlighted the efforts made by IGL in inculcating the safety habits and for welfare of the drivers who are the important users of CNG. He detailed the salient features of IGL  Suraksha Yojana.

It has been the endeavour of IGL to include the category of drivers in the broader gamut of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. During the last year, IGL has undertaken health, as well as eye check up camps for the auto drivers at its various CNG stations

IGL Suraksha Yojana is an initiative being undertaken by IGL under its CSR programme.Under the scheme, a sum of Rs. 1.5 Lakh would be paid to the nominee in case of Death of a Driver in an accident while driving the CNG run Public Transport vehicles. An additional amount of Rs. 25000 towards children™s education allowance per child subject to a maximum of Rs. 50000 for two children would also be paid to the family in such cases. In case of an accident requiring treatment for fracture a maximum sum of Rs. 10000 would be paid to the driver. In case of permanent disability that leads to loss of employment, than a lump sum equal to 100% is payable to such insured person. In case of partial disability, a graded compensation from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 75000 would be paid to the driver. The insurance policy is being issued through Oriental Insurance Company in the first year and IGL would be paying premium for the policy to cover drivers of nearly 2.5 lakh CNG run public transport vehicles operating in the capital.

IGL Suraksha Yojana would be absolutely free for the drivers and the procedure for claim would be quite simple. The claim forms would be available at all CNG stations of IGL as office of Oriental Insurance Company in the capital. In case of death claim, nominee will have to submit copies of FIR, postmortem report, viscera report, copy of driving license of the deceased and copy of RC of public transport vehicle being driven. In case of disability, the claim would have to be supported by certificate from government approved panel. However, acceptance of claim would be subject to the driver having a valid driving licence and the CNG mode being endorsed on RC at the time of accident.
