Internet Society Celebrate World IPV6 Day – India IPV6 Task Force Newsletter and Compendium on IPV6 Activities Released
Sh. R Chandrashekhar, Secretary (Telecom) released the first India IPv6 (Internet Protocol IPv6 )Task Force Newsletter and technical compendium on IPv6 activities at a function held in Sanchar Bhawan on the occasion of World IPv6 day, 8th June, 2011. Sh. S. C. Misra, Member (S), Smt. Sadhana Dixit, Member (Finance), Sh.J.Gopal, Advisor (T) and other senior officers of DoT, TEC, DIT, BSNL and MTNL were also present.
Speaking on the occasion Sh. R Chandrashekhar said that the IPv6 newsletter will showcase the efforts and progress made by India and technical compendium compiled by TEC will be very useful and handy for IPv6 implementation in the country. The Secretary said that most of the major service providers are on the right track and expressed satisfaction that DoT is working closely with all stakeholders and will make it happen on time.
World IPv6 day is globally celebrated by the Internet Society. The goal of this event is to motivate organizations across the industry, Internet service providers, hardware manufacturers, operating system vendors and web companies to prepare themselves for a successful transition to IPv6 as IPv4 address space runs out.
In India about 18.5 million IPv4 addresses are available for more than 180 million data users and we need to have at least one IP address for each data user, keeping this in view, Government of India has released IPv6 policy in July, 2010, according to which ˜All major Service providers will offer IPv6 services by December, 2011™ and ˜All Central and State government ministries and departments, including its PSUs, shall start using IPv6 services by March-2012™
